Despite Africa having over 2000 languages, only 13 of them are recognized by current technologies. Our goal is to digitize and build state-of-the-art machine translation (MT) systems to cater for these abandoned languages.

To exhibit the functionality and usability of the MT system, we are building a conversational chatbot that is capable of reliably and accurately answering menstrual and mental health questions. This chatbot can answer questions in multiple African languages, with a focus on the languages we are translating.

For accessibility and practicality purposes, we are building a mobile application that allows users to interact with both the chatbot and machine translation systems via a single interface. This application will be optimized to operate on minimal hardware and internet capacity in order to better service our intended user base.
